The sweet-smelling ginger originated in India and was introduced to Hawaii by the early Polynesian settlers. Its leaves, stalks, and roots have been used for cooking, hygiene, and medicinal purposes. The beautifully scented ginger (Awapuhi Ke’oke’o--white ginger or Awapuhi Melemele—yellow ginger) is sewn through an open bloom (length-wise and on top of each other) to create a simple, stylish lei.
